Teaching 40 Highschoolers -- September 30, 2019

Ahoj,

Tuesday we had district council in Plzen and our mission President, President Gehring joined us. We had interviews afterwards too.  It was so good to talk to him. That man is so inspired. Then he drove us to the train station so fast. But, we missed our train, so we had to catch another one. They were doing work on the tracks so we caught a bus first, then got on a train, and then had to transfer to another train to make it all the way home. We barely made it home for our English class. We whipped together a quick lesson and it went really well. We had 3 students. One was new. We actually ran into him when we were buying our groceries on Monday and he said he would come. I'm glad he did!

Wednesday we had a lesson with Andrea. She is not the same person. Her countenance has completely changed. We re-taught her the restoration, but her heart just didn't seem opened to the message like it used to be. I think her partner, Jirka, has been causing her to have doubts and giving her anti because she now has a lot of the same ideas he does. It is really frustrating, but there is honestly not much we can do about it. We are in a constant battle against Satan and we can't take away the agency of others. Then we visited Věra, shared a thought, and played uno. Afterwards, we had a lesson with Jiřina and taught her about prayer and scripture study. We were sitting on a bench under a tree for the lesson and then it started pouring rain. Thanks to the tree cover we stayed pretty dry. So it all worked out nicely.

Thursday we had 3 lessons fall through, so we had all day to find people. It was incredible because we saw lots of miracles and talked to so many people. The biggest miracle came when we went trackting. We felt like we needed to try a ponolock that had just been built. It was one big building broken up into 4 buildings. Each door had a list of people. At the first door and long list of names, we didn't have any luck. At the second one, a man invited us up. We went up a couple floors until we found him waiting at his door. We asked him a few questions and found out that he had met with the missionaries 15 years ago and had been to English class a few times. We talked to him about the Book of Mormon and asked if he had one, he said he thought he did, and went to find it. He came back with his Kniha Mormonova and a restoration pamphlet in it. That in itself was a miracle. He kept his Book of Mormon when he moved into his new apartment! We commited him to read a chapter and then taught him how to pray. Sister Draper gave an example prayer and then he prayed afterwards. It was really cool. This all happened on his doorstep because we couldn't go in with him being the only one that lived there. We got his number so we could follow up on his commitment to read. Then we went and rang more doorbells and tried not to get soaking wet because it started pouring rain. Well, we ended up pretty wet, so we jumped in puddles on the way home. Haha.

Friday we spent at a highschool. Radek got us in touch with a colleague and she invited us to come talk to her class about America. So we talked to about 30 students between the ages of 15-18 about the cultural differences and American holidays. It was fun. Then there was a 20 minute break and another class joined us. So we had about 40 kids and they all asked us questions. We were asked what we believed. So we were able to teach all of them the Restoration of the gospel. Many of the questions they asked we were able to tie back to points of the gospel. So we also touched on the Word of Wisdom and the law of chastity. It was incredible how many youth we were able to teach in such a short amount of time. Then we came home, did our studies and weekly planning.

Saturday we did our studies in the morning, then went and did some trackting out by the university. The campus was dead because it was Saturday. Then we went home to grab sports clothes and then went to clean the church. On our way, a security guard at a hotel called us over. Turns out he knew one of our returning members and has met with missionaries in the past. He was nice and interested and English class. So, I hope he will come to English and hopefully start taking lessons again. We cleaned the church and had a lesson with Radek about goal setting. Afterwards, we had sports night and had a good turn out. Radek, Krýstina, and Bratr Maška came. We also invited a random guy walking by to come play with us! He did, and he stayed for the spiritual thought! It was awesome.

Sunday we had a good turnout at church. I led the music and we had a great 5th Sunday combined lesson on the talk from last conference (April 2019) Careful vs. Casual. Then we came home and did companion study to prepare a lesson for Mengmeng and Daquan. We traveled to their new home and taught them the word of wisdom. It went really well and they committed to live it. Then we came home and finished personal study and language study. Afterwards, we had correlation.

Today we went to dívčí kámen which is some castle ruins and walked around it was a lot of fun.

I'm so grateful for the miracles I get to see everyday. I'm so grateful for my Savior who I can always count on. I cannot wait for General Conference this upcoming weekend!  I want to encourage you to prepare questions and then listen for the answers during conference. I promise you that the spirit will touch your heart and help you find the answers to those questions. I know President Nelson and his apostles are called of God. I know they will share with us what Heavenly Father wants us to hear!

Have a wonderful week!

School Service & the power of prayer -- September 23, 2019

Čau všem,

Tuesday we had district council at the Glasser's house. Then we did our studies and studied about what it means to be a successful missionary. Success in this mission is really hard to measure by numbers, so sister Draper and I figured out how to measure our success. Then we talked to some people on the street and invited them to come unto christ and hear His message. We taught our beginners class and had 3 people there today. Afterwards, we taught the plan of salvation. Our district went and got burritos after for dinner. It was fun.

Wednesday we had a lot of plans fall through so we did a lot of finding and trackting. I learned that people yell at us because they don't understand the important message we have. Then I think about how Christ was yelled at and how he patiently and kindly handled every situation. He truly is the ultimate example and every day I'm striving to become more like him. We also had some wonderful studies and worked on updating the area book.

Thursday we had 5 lessons. First, we visited Věra and shared a thought with her. Second, we had a lesson with Tereza and had to take a bus out to her city. She is very intelligent and a strong believer. We taught her the gospel of Jesus Christ. Then we hurried to the church building and had our third lesson with Jirka. We also taught him the gospel of Jesus Christ and had a member there to help teach. Then we went to visit Jiřina. We brought her muffins and shared a quick spiritual thought because she has been sick. Lastly, we had family home evening at the Glassers house with Andrea and her family. It was a lot of fun. I'm always grateful for busy days and people to teach.

Friday morning we did our studies and then Radek invited us to watch him teach because he got a new job teaching machinery. So, we went to a school with 15-18 year olds and he gave us a lesson on E=1/2mv^2, E=mhg, and P1V1=P2V2.  It was fun. We were the only girls in the room. All the kids ran out after class so we didn't get to talk to them, but at least they saw the name tags and we were able to support Radek. He was happy we came. Then Věra called and asked us to buy a few things for her at the store. We were happy to serve her. We did weekly planning and then went to dinner with the Elders and the Glassers to celebrate Elder Harrell's 2 year mark. We went to one restaurant and ordered drinks. When we tried to order food, the waitress said the kitchen was closed. Then the place basically turned into a bar and a guy started playing music on the guitar, so we left and went to another restaurant to get food. Haha, it was quite the adventure.

Saturday was very memorable. We did our studies in the morning and then we went to do some service for Pani Vlková with the Elders. She gave us hard as a rock gummy worms. Haha. Then we washed her windows for her. We came out there smelling strong like cigarette smoke. She has a bit of a word of wisdom problem. :D Then we did some more service trackting and afterwards went to clean the church. Some sort of riot broke out and there were a bunch of police in black uniforms, cop cars, and ambulances blocking a street off by the church, but within a half hour it was under control and they all left. It was interesting. Then we had sports night and played Volleyball. Krýstina and Radek came.

On Sunday it was wonderful to partake of the sacrament and get a fresh start for the upcoming week. Then we did studies. I had a really spiritual experience during my personal study and found a talk that I felt was written specifically for me. I know God is so aware of us. Then we went and did some trackting and had correlation.

This morning we went running with President Chrdle and his phone fell out of his pocket. It wa pitch black when we were running and it was all we could do not to trip over roots. President was really worried about finding his phone. As we re-traced our steps I was praying that we could find it. Then just as we were almost back to his house, I just about stepped on it. So we found it and he was so grateful. Moral of the story... prayer works...every time. Then we took a trip and visited strachatice. We saw a old castle and got some ice cream.

This week I've really pondered on what it means to be a successful missionary. I feel like I am running as fast and as hard as I can every day, but I see very little results from my efforts. This is the most atheist country in the world and I often wonder if my efforts are wasted. But, I'm here "that they may once again come to the knowledge of God, yea, the redemption of Christ; that they may once again be a delightsome people" Mormon 1:8.  However, despite how hard it is I know Heavenly Father is perfectly aware of me. Every day he is shaping me into a better disciple of Jesus Christ. He's helping me develop the attributes to become more like my Savior. My constant prayers and study of the scriptures have strengthened my testimony. My understanding of how to  recognize and follow spiritual promptings has grown immensely. I know that these tools I'm developing now will help me survive in the future as we prepare for our dear Savior to come.

Mushroom Hunting -- September 16, 2019

Ahoj,

Tuesday we had district council and did district inventory. Our district is awesome. Then we came home and did our studies. Afterwards, we taught our English class and had 3 new people come who just saw our sign on the door. One of which was interested in our message and so we are going to start teaching her which is exciting! Then I Sister Draper had me try Couscous for dinner. :)
Wednesday was a really hard day for us in terms of the work. A lot of things got canceled and plans kept falling through. We tried to visit our miracle lady we met on the street who gave us her address, but when we went there, we couldn't find her name on the doorbell. We tried ringing other people, but they were all businesses, so I hope we run into her again. Then we had a lesson with Andrea and she looked so sad and tired. She wasn't her normal happy self. We had her write down all of her questions about the church and we found answers to them together. Her heart just didn't seem open. Despite the rough morning, we did have a miracle. We met with the cute grandma that lives in our ponolock. She gave us chlebíček and cake. We shared our family pictures, sang her some hymns with the ukulele and taught her how to pray. She kept getting phone calls and she was telling all her friends about us, it was cute.

Thursday was a busy and fun day. We had a lesson with Honza and finished teaching him the restoration. He is keeping commitments and progressing well, the hardest part is just setting up with him because he lives so far away. Then we took a train about an hour out to go visit a member. She is the strongest woman in our branch and travels so far to come to church every Sunday. We wanted to show our gratitude for her so we went to visit her. She showed us around her city, bought us the best ice cream and took us to a chocolate factory where we learned how chocolate is made and got to try some. We then sat next to a lake and read Ether 3 and talked about faith. Sister Škodová is just such an amazing example to me. I love her so much.

Friday was just so emotionally and spiritually taxing. We had amazing studies in the morning that helped us prepare for a big task ahead of us later in the day.... We did weekly planning and had a lot of people to plan for and schedule with. About 1/2 through we had to stop for our long awaited lesson with Radek and President Chrdle. We had been preparing for this lesson for over a week. We talked to Radek about baptism and surprised him with a baptismal program with his name on it. I have never seen him smile so big and I will never forget his face when he saw it. We invited Radek to be baptized on September 21, 2019. He was hesitant, so we had him pray about it right there in that lesson and afterwards he said he felt a good and positive feeling. He accepted the invitation to prepare for baptism on that day and President Chrdle commited him to pray and to receive his own personal confirmation that it was right before Sunday. Radek said he would text us when he got his confirmation. Radek will be baptized at a youth single adult conference at Hotel Štamberk and I am excited to watch him take this step on the path back to Heavenly Father. We came home and finished companion study with gratitude and prayers in our hearts that Radek will quickly receive his confirmation.

Saturday we did our morning studies and then the Glassers drove us out to Prachatice to visit Eliška at the hospital. Her twins are due in January and she had a check up. We were able to share a spiritual thought with her about the Book of Mormon. She is so sweet and I really enjoy talking to her, but she sure does have a lot on her plate. She's already got 5 small kids. She said the sweetest prayer at the end of our lesson. Then the Glassers had us take a quick stop at the namesti and there was this festival going on with a band and people dressed up in soldier costumes with old motorcycles. It was fun to see. We grabbed an ice cream cone and went on our way. Then we went and cleaned the church and had sports night afterwards. We invited 4 random teenagers to come and play soccer with us and it was so much fun! Radek was there and didn't mention anything about recieving a confirmation.

Sunday we had quite a few people at church. I played a piano arrangement of "if you could hie to kolob" for a musical number. I was really nervous, but it went well. I also translated most of sacrament meeting, so it was pretty busy. One of the Elders' investigators came to church. She is really old and couldn't make it up the stairs to the chapel, so the Elders stayed downstairs with her during sacrament and the second hour we stayed with her and taught her the plan of salvation. Then we went and visited Olina who is a less active and she promised to come to church next week. So, we will do everything we can to get her there. Then we came home and did our studies and finished the day with correlation with the branch President.

Today we went mushroom hunting and this really old lady took us. It took us 2 hours to walk out to the forest and to her cottage. Then a miracle guy saw us and picked us up in his car and brought us back to the train station. We found some mushrooms, but not any we could eat. Haha. It was fun. Lots of good stories came of it. Then we had a lesson with Radek. He didn't receive a confirmation that baptism was right, so the baptism is off. So keep him in your prayers.

Have a wonderful week.

So Much Traveling -- September 9, 2019

Čau všem,

Tuesday was a busy day. We got up and got on a train to Plzen for district council. It was one of the most spiritual district councils I have had on my mission. Everyone shared their conversion stories and the spirit was so strong. We grew a lot closer as a district. Then we went to lunch and they took 40 minutes to bring our food, so we ate it in 5 minutes and practically ran to the train station to catch a train home. Then we had a wonderful lesson with Andrea. Afterwards, Jirka came to English with us. We taught the conversational class this week which was fun!
Wednesday we got on another train to go to Prague for Progressive training. I learned a lot more about the history of the mission. The first missionary, Thomas Biesinger came here in 1884. On July 24, 1929 the Czech Republic was dedicated for the preaching of the gospel by President Nelson at Karlštejn. In 1933, the Book of Mormon was translated into Czech. Wallace Toronto was the first mission President and had to evacuate the mission for World War II from 1939-1945. On May 15, 2016 the first stake in the Czech Republic was dedicated by President Uchdorf. Now, we are working towards a second stake and a temple. The history here is so rich and so many people have sacrificed so much for religion. The members here are truly amazing. After training, we came home and ran into our neighbor on the 3rd floor. We asked her if we could bring her something and she accepted. So, we brought her some muffins we made and she gave us a tour of her house and showed us all her family pictures and her husband's ashes. We talked about how families can be together forever and she believes that. She is such a sweet lady. She kept trying to give us little gifts and we ended up with some wafer cookies and jam. She said she felt that there was something different and special about us. I'm glad that she was able to feel the Holy Ghost. I hope we can keep bringing her joy and teach her the gospel.

Thursday we had a normal day. We did our studies and then went to visit Věra. We shared a thought and then we went and talked to some people on a busy street. We met a miracle. One woman we talked to used to have the missionaries come by all the time, but then she moved to Germany and she just moved back. We gave her information about church and she gave us her address so that we can go visit her. The cool thing was... on this busy road out of all the people we could have talked to, I looked up and saw her. Sister Draper saw her too and without saying anything to each other, we knew we had to talk to her. The spirit really guides us to the people we need to talk to. We then taught Jirka the plan of salvation and he accepted it and said he knew it was true. He has been keeping our commitments and is progressing well. It is exciting to watch. Then we came home and did weekly planning, companion inventory and device audits.

Friday we did all of our studies in the morning. Then we packed and got on a train to go to Prague. Well, there was an accident on the track, so we had to get onto another train, then a bus, and then back onto another train to get there. However, we did meet a super nice lady who helped us figure out where we needed to go. We got her number and are going to meet up with her next week. From Prague, we took the metro to a bus station and then took a bus to Liberec. It was a total of 6 hours of traveling. Crazy. But, we made it. We crashed at the Jone's house with the Plzen sisters for the night.
Saturday we took part in the Walace Toronto Service project. He was the first mission President and we do the project in remembrance of him. There were 4 different stations of service. For our station, we literally took out a forest. We pulled out trees and branches and vines. We placed them all in a pile and by the end, the pile was as big as a house. I don't know how they are going to get rid of that huge pile of trees. We cleared out the forest so that it can be made into a playground for kids. If there is one thing I can say about Czechs, it is that they know how to work! Even little kids were dragging branches for hours. They gave us a tea break because the weather was a little rainy and cold and they fed us fried chicken and potatoe salad for lunch. Afterwards, we met met up with everyone and I got to see my friends from Třebič. Then we drove home with the Glassers and it only took us 3 hrs to get home. We finished the day by having correlation with our branch President.
Sunday was busy we went early to church to meet Gita. We visited with her and got things ready for church. Sister Draper gave a talk about the Holy ghost and I translated. We had 3 people we are teaching at church. However, after church was very frustrating because there was a returning member giving the people we are teaching anti material and there was a whole big debate that went down. It was horrible. For some reason, Czechs really like to debate. After church we had a lesson with Mengmeng and Daquan and we talked about the holy ghost. We discussed how they can recognize the holy ghost and receive answers to their prayers. It was a good lesson.

Today we went to Česky Krumlov and the Dransfields came up to visit. It was a lot of fun!

Love you all,

Sestra Guymon
