HAPPY THANKSGIVING -- November 25, 2019

Čau!

Monday we went to Mikulov. We saw a castle and went on probably one of the prettiest hikes I have ever been on. There were fall leaves and a misty rain. The sunshine was peaking through the clouds. When we got to the top, we had a view of the whole city. You could look out and see the castle, the red roofs, the vineyards and the fields. It was absolutely stunning! There was a church at the top too. We also went to dinner with an investigator from Liberec and helped her find the train station.

Tuesday we had correlation with a member. Then we did companion study and 12 week. Afterwards we went to Zuska and Peter's house for lunch. They made shepherds pie and we did the dishes and shared the talk "A summer with great aunt rose" by Elder Uchdorf. Then we went back to the church and did personal study. We taught our English class and afterwards gave a thought from the my foundations book. We had a really good discussion and the students liked it. After class, one student stayed behind and asked me some more questions about the plan of salvation and the 3 kingdoms. I really enjoyed talking to him and teaching him. At first it was a little like combating religions and I didn't like that so I said a quick prayer in my heart to invite the spirit. When the spirit came, the teaching environment totally changed and his heart was softened. The spirit does wonders! Then we went home and did language study.

Wednesday we did personal study and then went and taught Tino the plan of salvation with the Elders. Then we did a language study with him and soon his whole family showed up. His dad, then his mom came home from work, then his brother came downstairs, then his grandma and grandpa came, and then his aunt and uncle. So they basically had a big family reunion. They fed us lunch and we celebrated the aunt's birthday and had cake with them. It was so much fun. They honestly feel like my second family. About half of them are members. The grandma also invited us over for lunch sometime, so we are going to set that up with her. Then we had district council. Afterwards, we went to institute and a YSA activity. They were watching a movie for the YSA activity, so we called our mission President and asked if we could stay and he said yes. So, we got to watch a movie with the YSA and our investigators.

Thursday we did some group finding and created a jar with random acts of service we came up with. We went around asking people to pick one and to do that service activity. We ended up talking to an entire football team and some cheerleaders. They gave us free pizza and we gave them acts of service. It was a win, win. :) Then we ran into Simone who is a member and he invited us to get hot chocolate with him which was perfect because it was beginning to rain. Afterwards, we did our studies and then went over to dinner at the Ferrell's house. We had 2 friends of the church and a returning member there. I had my companions take the lead in the spiritual discussion about the restoration and they did a good job.

Friday we went out to an animal shelter to do some service. We helped clean all the places where they keep the cats. They have about 150 animals there. Including dogs, cats, chickens, turtles, cows, pigs, and sheep. Then we went to dinner with Kuba and afterwards to the relief society activity. We did zumba and brought Nikola with us.

Saturday we went to the church and taught our czech class. We started out with a good number of people at the beginning of the transfer, but now we are few in numbers. After the class, we had a lesson with Nikola. It has been fun to watch her go from not believing to beginning to believe in God, pray, and read in the Book of Mormon. She spends a lot of time with us. We probably see her 4 or 5 times a week at different activities. She is awesome. Then we went over to the De Vries house and Zuska taught us how to make Cukrovi and Pernik (Christmas cookies and gingerbread cookies)! Then we came home and did our studies.

Sunday we had a wonderful sacrament meeting. Guess who was there?! My Grandma! Yep, I have a Grandma on the mission. Babička Pohořelická. She is my last mission President's mom. She came with her son and daughter in law to church. I loved seeing all of them from Třebíč, which was my first area. It was so fun to actually be able to have a conversation with them. My Czech has improved a lot since I started my mission. My Grandma, Babička Pohořelická told me that she is coming to America in April for our mission reunion! So that will be so much fun! We had two investigators at church too. Those were the highlights of Sunday.

Today we went to some Christmas markets. They will be lighting up all the Christmas trees on all the town squares in the Czech Republic this week on December 1st, so I'm looking forward to that!

Also, this week is Thanksgiving... so HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! I'm so grateful for all of you! I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve a mission and meet amazing people. I'm grateful for beautiful sunsets and sunrises. I'm grateful for the stars that dance through the night sky. I'm grateful that I can smell and touch the world around me. I'm grateful for a healthy body. And most of all, I'm grateful for my amazing family! I know that as we express our gratitude we will be happier. We will better be able to recognize the Lord's hand in our lives and the blessings he has given us. So tell your family what you are grateful for this week!

I love you all! Have a wonderful week!

70 Member Exchanges -- November 18, 2019

Ahoj,

Monday we went up to Brno castle špilberk and it overlooked the whole city. It was beautiful. My companions also got some things for winter.

Tuesday we did our studies and then went to  lunch at the De Vries house. Then we went and had a lesson with Tino and we taught the gosepl of Jesus Christ. Afterwards, we went to the church and our English students taught us pottery again. Then we taught English and went and picked up sister Twitchell and sister goldwaite. They slept over and went to training with us in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Wednesday we woke up at 4:15 and hopped on a train to Bratislava, Slovakia the country over. It was interesting crossing the boarder and the train ticket checker switching languages. Then Elder Copischke, a member of the 70 from Germany gave us a training. We talked about a new way to give commitments and instead of inviting or challenging people to do things we will now invite then to experiment upon the word. He gave us a new way to ask members for referrals and new finding ideas using family history. I'm really excited to apply what I learned. Then the Assitants to the President drove us home and we cooked dinner and began exchanges with the sister training leaders.

Thursday we had exchanges with the sister training leaders. We did our studies in the morning and then we went to lunch at an Indian restaurant and I got a free kofola mug. I was pretty happy about that. Then we went and visited a member. Afterwards, we came home and had interviews. Then the sister training leaders left and we went to Skype into a devotional. However, it didn't end up working which was sad. President said he would record it so we could watch it later. Then we came home and did 12 week.

Friday morning we took a train out to moravske branice to do service. We posted on Facebook that we were looking for service opportunities and a guy asked us to come help him clean his house. We went out there with the Elders and cleaned away both outside and inside. It was fun to get to know him too. He fed us lunch and gave me a recipe for gulaš, which I'm super excited about. Then he took us for a walk around his city and then he took a train back to Brno with us. It was a great service opportunity. Then we went to the church and started reading the new missionary handbook. Afterwards, we went to dinner at the Ferrell's house. We had 2 friends of the church and a returning member there. We also had a really great spiritual discussion. All the missionaries shared why they decided to serve a mission.

Saturday we did companion study then we went to the church and taught Czech class. Afterwards, we shared a spiritual thought and brother Ferrell brought homemade salsa. Then we went to support didi at his hockey game. His dad was a professional hockey player so he was telling us all the rules and introducing us to his friends. It was a cool finding method. Then we came home and did the rest of our studies and then went to simone's house for dinner. We finished the day by starting weekly planning.

Sunday we had a wonderful sacrament meeting and Sunday school. Then we ate lunch with the Přerovskovi family and shared a message about the Book of Mormon. They have 2 adorable kids. Then we came home and did all of our studies and finished weekly planning.

This week I have learned the importance of communication and openness. It really strengthens relationships; not only with the people around you, but also with your Heavenly Father when you turn to him in prayer. When was the last time you had a really open heart to heart conversation with Heavenly Father or those around you? I invite you to try it this week. Experiment and see what happens!

Gratitude -- November 11, 2019

Čau!

Tuesday we got up and did studies. Then we we went to the church and had call ins with the Sister training leaders and they gave me some invites on how to help my companions. Then we went to the De Vries house for lunch and shared a spiritual thought. Afterwards, we helped a returning member clean a house she is moving out of. Then we went to the church for a pottery class with one of our English students who is an art teacher. He brought a special kind of clay and will put everything in the kiln for us. That was super fun. Then we taught our English class. After that we went to dinner with Simone and he invited a friend over and we shared a spiritual thought.

Wednesday was busy. We had a member do language study with us which was helpful. Then we had district council and went and took a district picture for a Christmas Book that is being made. Then we did some finding and went to dinner with a member. She made us gulaš and we shared a thought with her. Then we came home and finished our studies. Also today was the first wednesday of the month so, at noon they tested the communist bells to make sure they work. It is just a loud siren that blasts through all the speakers in the city and then they turn it off. I always like to imagine what Czechs did back in the day when those sirens were going off.

Thursday we went to a cafe and did weekly planning and got some hot chocolate. Then we went and did some service. We helped some returning members clean up and unpack things in their new house. Then we did our studies and went to the Ferrell's house for dinner and shared a talk about humility and gratitude and how they work together.

Friday we did our studies and then went out to the dam for companion inventory and device audits because we were tired of being in the house. Then we were asked to go to the relief society activity and work out with them. We did like a zumba workout and it was honestly so much fun. The young men were doing karaoke with disco lights in the other room. Haha. Then we went to dinner with Adela. We met her at the Halloween party and she has met with a lot of missionaries in the past, so we just spent some time getting to know her. She is super awesome!

Saturday we taught a Czech class and afterwards had a spiritual discussion with Nikola. It is really cool to watch her grow and go from being completely atheist to start believing that God exists. We did a little bit of planning with the Elders for the upcoming week. Then we had sports night and played a little but of floorball and ping pong. Afterwards, we went and visited Simone and tried to bring him some joy. Then we came home and finished our studies.

Sunday we went to church and had the primary program. It was really cute. Then we went home and did our studies. Afterwards, we went to inspiration night and visited with people. We had a great discussion with Nikola and she prayed for the first time on saturday night.

This week I studied about gratitude. I did an exercise where I sat down and wrote down everything that I was grateful for. The people, the places, things, etc. It really helped me fill my heart with gratitude and love. It helped me recognize the blessings I have and the Lord's hand in my everyday life. I challenge you to try it. It is that time of year to share your gratitude. So take a minute and write down a few things you are grateful for and why. I promise you that as you do so, happiness and gratitude will fill your heart.

15 Months & Halloween -- November 4, 2019

Ahoj,

Monday we spent time at a members house and she taught us how to make homemade donuts. They invited YSA's, less actives, recent converts, and friends to come. We made over 100 donuts and afterwards had dinner together and family night. It was a lot of fun.

Tuesday we we did our studies and then went to the De Vries house for lunch and shared a spiritual thought. Then we went had  a lesson with Tino. We shared a thought and he helped us with our czech. I learned a lot. Then we went to the church and taught English. We only had 4 students, but it was fun. Afterwards, we went over and ate lasagna with Simone that he made. I was impressed. He's Italian, so it was pretty good. Also, funny story, when we were going to the church building, we ran to catch a tram and I jumped on and my companions were right behind me however, the bell rang and the doors closed right in our face. We kept pushing the button to open the doors on both sides but, the tram drove away. I just waved goodbye because at that point there was nothing either of us could do. I just got off at the next stop and then walked back to them. Haha, it happens sometimes, but it was the first time it has happened to me on my mission.

Wednesday we did some service for a member. We helped take out wet clothes and throw them away because the night before her house flooded. There was a leak in the pipes above her, so it was a bit of a mess. Afterwards, we had district council. Then we got lunch and did our studies. We finished the night with institute. The youth in this ward are very proactive and are very helpful in terms of missionary work. We also had a really good discussion about temptation and repentance.

Thursday.. HAPPY HALLOWEEN. We did our studies and went to lunch with the assistants to the President and the Newell's. Elder Newell just finished his mission and brought his parents back to visit. His dad does music and the spoken word. So we all got lunch at an Indian resturaunt. The assistants to the President dropped some things off for our apartment. Then we did weekly planning and called half of the ward to invite them to our Halloween party.

Friday.. HAPPY ALL SAINTS DAY! Also, it was my 15th month mark on the mission. Crazy! We did all our studies in the morning. Then we went to the zoo to try and ask for service opportunities. We are trying to come up with new creative ways of finding. Afterwards, we went to visit some returning members. Then we went and set up for the ward Halloween party. We had a really good turn out with lots of families and friends of members. I met lots of new people and set up with 2 new investigators for next week. We had food, children games, and pumpkin carving. The YSA and youth organized everything. The adults didn't help at all which was super cool. We have incredible, responsible youth! Then we hurried home to make it home on time.

Saturday we went and taught people how to speak Czech. We had 6 students. Then the Ferrell's took us to lunch at a nice Resturaunt. It was delicious! Afterwards, we went to visit a returning member and when we were half way there, they canceled on us, so that was a little rough. Then we came home to study. Our mission President dropped by with some packages for my companions. He's awesome and was showing us pictures of the Rome, Italy temple because he was there for a conference last week. Then we went with a returning member and the bishop and his 2 kids to the cemetery to celebrate all saints day/day of the dead. They had a bunch of candles and flowers like in the movie coco. It was beautiful. It was really interesting because they had boxes, that looked like lockers with a glass door, lined up for the ashes of people that have been cremated. They also have super fancy headstones everywhere. Candles lit up the graveyard and it was stunning.

Sunday we went to church for fast and testimony meeting. I love the members here in Brno. One of the members came up to us after sacrament and invited us over for dinner. Right after church we had a lunch appointment with Nikola. We had a good discussion about the law of chastity and she let us go through some clothes she didn't want anymore. We left straight from there to go to our dinner appointment. The Saunders family all have perfect British English accents... their dad is from England and their mom is Czech. They prepared a 3 course meal and we had a fun time together. We shared a spiritual thought about being more home centered and church supported. It was cool because one of the boys invited a friend to the Halloween party and ever since, she has been writing us. The only problem is that she is a lot younger than we thought she was so we have to get parental permission to teach her.

I have a lot of joy and love in my heart. Everyday is an adventure and full of new opportunities. Often, it is stressful and there are hard things, however, after every trial blessings come. My testimony of the Book of Mormon has grown so much lately. I've immersed myself in the Book of Mormon and every spare moment I have, I read it. It brings me a lot of peace, comfort, and motivation to keep pressing forward. If you haven't been reading in the Book of Mormon every day, please do so. I promise you it will make your day 10 times better.
